Tephritis neesii
There are about 170 known Fruit fly species in the genus Tephritis. They are fairly tiny with a wing length roughly 3-4mm. The pattern can be useful when identifying the different species, although because of similarity between some species this can prove a difficult task. Recorders often prefer looking at actual specimens when it comes to flies in the genus because it is important to examine hairs in various places. This picture had enough wing pattern features to identify it. Many inhabit inflorescences of plants. The fact that this fly was sitting on Oxeye Daisy also helped give a confident identification.
