Graphomya maculata
Common. The male (pictured) has an orangey-brown pattern on the abdomen. Females have a black and grey-white abdomen. Both have characteristic stripes on the thorax. This a member of the Housefly family (Muscidae). They visit umbellifers and other flowers in the meadows and hedgerows from May to October. The predatory larvae inhabit muddy locations and moist leaf litter. Verified by Essex Field Club recorder, Del Smith.
