Dioctria baumhaueri

Robber flies (aka Assassin flies) feed on other insects. The common name is derived from their aggressive predatory habits. They ambush prey which they catch in flight. This blackish fly measures up to 13mm long. Found in grassland habitats and on hedgerows during summer and autumn. Identified by Essex Field Club recorder, Del Smith.
