There are over 350 British different cranefly species, this is one of the less recorded ones. It flies in April and early May and has a large grey abdomen with a black line on each side. Both wings are 17-20mm long and have a white line that extends to the tip. This species is usually found near streams, ditches and marshy woodland. Its larvae are aquatic.
