Fallow Deer

Fallow Deer

Dama dama

Fallow Deer have been in Britain since Norman times. In this area we normally get dark Fallow because the Normans had an enclosure in Epping Forest with darker specimens which were ancesters of the ones we see here. In the rest of the country Fallow are usually lighter, gingery-brown with white spots on the back.

Mike Rumble travelling through Harold Hill spotted this herd on a housing estate. With humans encroaching on land once used by wildlife it should come as no surprise when it tries to claim it back. Nature appears to be fighting a losing battle so we should be doing everything we can to give it some support or eventually we will lose so much and our children will not be able to enjoy what we do today. In the past politicians such as Mr Edward North Buxton Buxton and the Rt. Hon. Earl Carrington understood the importance of nature for society and hopefully there are still some politicians like that about today.
