Green Woodpecker

Green Woodpecker

Picus viridis

Green Woodpeckers spend a lot of time on the ground searching for their favourite food... ants. If disturbed there is likely to be a yelp and a flash of yellow tail-feather as they seek the safety of a tree out of harm's way. Two Woodpeckers on the ground head nodding at each other may give the impression of an intricate courtship dance. However, they are likely to be males having a dustup over territory or a mate.
