Romford Market started when King Henry III granted permission in 1247. This allowed for a livestock market to be held every Wednesday enabling local farmers to sell sheep and cattle. The market was established to serve as an outlet for the leather trade that was active in Hornchurch.

King Henry III's Royal Charter declared: "Concerning the holding of a market. It is ordered that the Sheriff of Essex shall proclaim publicly throughout his county and its hundreds the establishment and holding of a market at Romford on Wednesdays, with all the liberties and customs belonging to the said market."

Around the 17th century, the market briefly open on Mondays and Tuesdays. By 1919, the market had transitioned to a daily schedule, but by 1925, it returned to being held only on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Cattle sales continued on Wednesdays until 1958, while Fridays and Saturdays featured a broader mix of goods, including fruit, vegetables, and various household items.
