Honey Bee

Apis mellifera

A single, large queen is responsible for laying thousands of eggs. This hole made by a woodpecker is now being used by bees as a nesting site. Most honey bees in Britain live in man-made wooden boxes called apiaries or beehives, which are managed by beekeepers to produce honey.
