Great Willow Aphid
Tuberolachnus salignus
A large population of these aphids were found on stems of crack willow near Hainault Lake. The aphids measured up to 6 mm in length, had brown spotted bodies, but were covered in a layer of white dust that gave them a greyish appearance. The adults possess a large tubercle that extends from the back. It is believed that this species reproduces solely through asexual means. There were several hornets and wasps flying around this particular hedgerow possibly seeking honeydew produced by the aphids.
