Turkeytail
Trametes versicolour
Turkeytail fungus exhibits a variety of colours due to a combination of its growth stages, environmental conditions and genetic factors. The outermost, lighter band represents the youngest and actively growing part, while the darker rings toward the centre indicate older growth. Green on the surface is often the result of algae growth rather than being part of the fungus itself. Concentric rings appear as the mushroom grows in stages. Pigments form in response to different levels of UV sunlight, moisture, temperature and humidity during development. Genetic variations within the species create distinct hues and the specific type of decaying wood or tree host providing nutrients also has an impact on the colouration.
