Black-headed Gull

Black-headed Gull

Chroicocephalus ridibundus

This species is common almost anywhere inland and is certainly not just a 'seagull'. Although heads can appear black from a distance they are actually dark-brown. In winter there is usually only a small spot on the side of the head. This is the smallest of the commoner Gulls and the type most likely to be spotted on Hainault Lake. They feed on worms, insects, fish, carrion and scraps.
