Woodland flowering plant that appears during April and May. The plant has many common names which normally have risque meanings. However, it is possible that "Lords and Ladies" is a reference to this plant being used for starching ruffs worn around gentry necks during the 16th century. The roots were once a traditional source of starch used for stiffening clothes. In the Middle Ages.

Berries of this woodland plant appear after the flowers have withered. The berries are toxic to many animals, including humans. However, they are harmless to birds, which eat them and spread the seeds.
