Ruddy Darter

Sympetrum sanguineum

The Ruddy Darter is a medium-sized dragonfly that is active from July to October. Males are characterised by a crimson red colour, while females are ochre. Both males and females have black legs. The abdomen has a club-shaped tip. This species prefers shallow water with abundant vegetation and is more likely to be seen around the forest ponds than by Hainault Lake. They typically perch on waterside vegetation watching for potential prey. After pursuing prey or chasing away a rival, they usually return to the same perch.
