ILFORD CARNIVAL
Native American
The Indigenous people
This postcard depicts a carnival participant in fancy dress. In 1908, American indigenous peoples were often referred to as 'Indians' or 'Red Indians.' While the term "Native American" was recognised in the 19th century, it only started gaining widespread usage in the 1960s when civil rights activists advocated for its adoption, as it emphasised the fact that these communities existed prior to the arrival of Europeans.
