Lapwing

Lapwing

Vanellus vanellus

The Lapwing is the commonest inland wading bird, but has fallen into decline in recent years. Its name is derived from the 'lapping' sound of its wings in display flight. Peewit is another name this species is known as which refers to the bird's call. More likely to be seen at Fairlop Waters than Hainault Lake.
