Pondskater

Gerris sp.

A pond skater is a predatory aquatic insect that glides across the surface of still or slow-moving waters. Belonging to the Gerridae family, they contribute to the ecosystem by consuming dead and struggling insects that fall onto the water. Their ability to remain on the surface is due to the way they interact with water, as they distribute their body weight evenly, allowing them to walk on the thin membrane created by surface tension. Their legs and bodies are equipped with numerous tiny, water-repellent hairs that trap air bubbles, ensuring their buoyancy. They sense vibrations caused by nearby insect prey and navigate towards it. Prey is captured and pierced with specialised mouthparts to consume the bodily fluids. The middle legs provide forward propulsion, while the back legs assist with steering.
