HISTORY OF ILFORD

To fight fires in the 1880s Ilford used a fire escape ladder and a few leather hoses that were kept at the Red Lion near the Broadway until a Fire Station opened in Oakfield Road during 1893. When Ilford began to expand the Urban District Council took the decision to build a Central Fire Station which opened in Ley Street during 1905. Horse-drawn machines were used by the Brigade until 1914.
