HISTORY OF ILFORD

The name 'Cranbrook' is derived from the 'Cran Brook' a River Roding tributary. Cranbrook Road was originally fairly short, most of what we now call Cranbrook Road was once known as Barkingside Lane. Cranbrook Road was one of the first areas in Ilford to receive electric street lights on Saturday March 30th, 1901. The official switching on by Councillor Henry Weedon's wife occurred at the Drill Hall in the High Road on May 25th, two months later.
This postcard shows an ironmongers shop located in the middle of the parade on the right. A sign above the shop reads: "REMOVALS". Either side of that sign are two smaller ones advertising: "GAS FITTING" AND "PLUMBING ETC".
